Step into the heart of Sri Lanka’s rural life and agricultural heritage, where rice paddies, tea plantations, and spice gardens shape daily rhythms. This journey offers hands-on experiences with farming, village life, and traditional food preparation, while showcasing the scenic highlands, lush countryside, and cultural richness of the island. Walk through verdant fields, interact with local farmers, and discover the origins of Sri Lanka’s iconic spices and teas. Each day blends learning, exploration, and connection to nature for a truly authentic experience.

Day 1: Arrival / Negombo – Fisheries and Coconut Life

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to Negombo. Explore the fishing village and lagoon, observing traditional catamarans and the rhythms of daily life. Take a guided walk through coconut plantations to learn about toddy tapping, coir production, and local uses of coconut. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Negombo.

Day 2: Negombo – Sigiriya – Paddy Fields and Village Tour

Travel to the Cultural Triangle (approximately 4 hours). Enjoy a traditional village tour including a bullock cart ride, walks through paddy fields, and an introduction to chena cultivation. Participate in hands-on rice pounding and prepare a local meal with guidance from villagers. Overnight near Sigiriya.

Day 3: Sigiriya – Spice and Vegetable Cultivation

Optional early morning climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress for panoramic views and historical insight. Visit a spice garden in Inamaluwa to learn about cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, and nutmeg cultivation. In the afternoon, explore a vegetable farm to understand the farm-to-market system and participate in light harvesting where possible. Overnight stay in Sigiriya or Dambulla.

Day 4: Sigiriya – Kandy – Spices and Botanical Heritage

Transfer to Kandy (approximately 2 hours) through scenic countryside. Visit a rubber and spice plantation in Nalanda to learn about cultivation methods. Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, focusing on spice and medicinal plants. Optional evening cultural show to experience Kandyan music and dance. Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 5: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Tea Plantations and Dairy Farm

Travel into the central highlands by scenic train or car. Visit a tea estate and factory to participate in plucking, processing, and tasting tea. Continue to a local dairy farm to learn about milk production and traditional farming practices. Overnight stay in a tea bungalow or highland hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya – Farm Visit and Fresh Produce Market

Morning visit to local farms cultivating strawberries, leeks, carrots, and potatoes. Participate in light harvesting (seasonal) and meet local farmers. Afternoon visit to Nuwara Eliya’s fruit and vegetable market to see how produce is traded.
Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 7: Nuwara Eliya – Colombo Departure

Drive back to Colombo (approximately 5 hours), with optional stop at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage along the way. Transfer to the airport for your departure, carrying memories of hands-on farm experiences, tea and spice heritage, and Sri Lanka’s vibrant rural culture.
